Primary 2 have had another busy week!

We are enjoying the Garden Centre for our structured play in the open area.  We have been designing seed packets, planning and designing gardens and  role playing in our ‘pond’ .  We especially like the Garden programme that we can use on the laptops through Colour Magic.

This week we have been revising our addition to 20.  We are working hard to learn our number stories; then we will not have to use number lines or our fingers!

Example:   Story of 11

 11 + 0 = 11             11 – 0 = 11

10 + 1 = 11             11 – 1 = 10

9 + 2 = 11            11 – 2 = 9

8 + 3 = 11           11 – 3 = 8

7 + 4 = 11          11 – 4 = 7

6 + 5 = 11          11 – 5 = 6

5 + 6 = 11          11 – 6 = 5

4 + 7 = 11          11 – 7 = 4

3 + 8 = 11           11 – 8 = 3

2 + 9 = 11          11 – 9 = 2

1 + 10 = 11          11 – 10 = 1

0 + 11 = 11           11 – 11 = 0

We have been learning about the lifecycle of an apple tree.  We managed to find the seeds inside our apple core! Now we know what happens to these tiny seeds.

Please bring in a plastic bag next week to take finished work home.

Primary 2 have had a very busy week!

We have been learning about numbers to 100.  We can find the odd numbers and even numbers by remembering our songs

 “ 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, even numbers are just great!”

“ 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, odd numbers are just fine!”

Our spelling sound for this week has been ‘est’.  We have been doing lots of active spelling activities to help us to learn our words.  Our new activity this week has been pipe cleaners.  It has been fun to twist the pipe cleaners to make rainbow words!

It was Miss Oate’s and Miss McLean’s last day on Wednesday so Room 2 had a mini party to say good-bye.  Our favourite game was musical bumps.  We loved to dance!

Our new topic is Life Cycles and we have been learning about the life cycle of a frog.  We made a funny frog with google eyes during art time.  It also has a curly tongue to catch insects!

A message from Mrs Gibson

April 17, 2011

Hello Primary 2, this is just a message to say well done again for a fabulous day at the wedding.  Everyone did really well and I was very proud of you all.

Thank you Amelia, for the comment you left on our blog and then card you sent to me.  That was very nice of you to think of that.

Thank you to all the boys and girls who gave me cards and presents when I left, I have enjoyed them all.

I hope you enjoy your last term in primary 2 and work hard!

Our learning

March 18, 2011

While getting ready for the wedding we have been learning about what a cairn is – wait till the wedding to find out why we did that!

We have been busy at home going on Glow and answering Mrs Gibson’s questions and looking at photos.  Glow games are great too!

In writing we have been trying to write as much as four sentences!

We’re exctied!

March 4, 2011

We are getting very excited about the wedding and are trying hard to get ready for it. Jaimee and Connor are going to be the bride and groom. We decided this by Mrs Gibson writing the names on pieces of paper, putting them in a tub and different boys and girls got to pull out the names. This made sure it was fair. We decided on what everyone else was doing too in the same way.

In reading all of the groups are now on the yellow books. Some words in our books we have been learning are exclaimed, lived, rainforests, longed, South America, monster and stored.

We have been learning to log onto the computer by ourselves. Mrs Mooney helped us and then some of us were the teachers and helped other people.

We got our usernames and passwords for Glow and some of us at home went on and answered discussion question and posted photographs. Mrs Gibson was very, very impressed when she logged on at home and saw them all! Well done Primary 2!

Our work

February 25, 2011

using interstars to make shapes and letters

writing our spelling words on the computers

using playdough to make our spelling words

using pipecleaners to make our spelling words

some beautiful spelling homework from Megan

Learning about Caroll diagrams

And a different Carroll diagram

We have been continuing to learn about shapes.  The new ones we learned today are the pentagon with 5 sides and the hexagon with six sides.  Today we were also making patterns with different shapes.

We have also been starting to learn about how to do adding sums to 20.  Some of us think it has been quite tricky.

Mrs Gibson was at netball yesterday and Mrs Byrne did writing with us about going to the zoo.  She thought this one was really good:

I went to the zoo.  At the zoo I saw jumping zebras and slipping penguins.  I got there in a car.  It was good fun looking at the animals.

February 18, 2011

We have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes.  We did different activities in groups today about them.  We find it difficult to remember the sphere, cuboid, cylinder, cone and the triangle.  We will need to keep practising!

We have been learning odd and even numbers.  Some of us think that has been tricky.  We keep playing games to beat the clock.  The odd numbers are 1, 3, 5, 7 and. The even numbers are 0, 2, 4, 6, 8.  Could someone help us practise these up to the number 40.

We are learning how to organise a wedding.  We have made lists in groups of all the things we need to do and we are deciding who is going to be in the wedding party.  As a class we emailed the minister to ask for help in getting the service ready.  We hope you really dress up on the day!

Fruit tasting

February 11, 2011

After our assembly yesterday on healthy eating Mrs Gibson prepared lots of fruits for us to try and we made smoothies.

The fruits we tasted were:

kiwi, mango, pineapple, lychees and blueberries.    The favourite was mango.  Mrs Gibson says she is very proud of all of the people who tried things even though they were not sure if they were going to like them and even more if they kept trying things even though they hadn’t liked the last one.  We had a napkin in case we really didn’t like something.

We had a piece of paper and wrote the fruits on it and a smiley, a not sure or a sad face for whether we liked the fruits or not.

Next we tried we tried two different smoothies that Mrs Gibson made after we chose the fruit to put in.  The first one was banana and strawberrry and the second was orange, raspberries, banana and mango.  Mrs Gibson used skimmed milk, water, ice and natural yogurt (less sugar!) to mix with the fruit.

This covers a little of the Curriculum for Excellence experience and outcome:

I enjoy eating a diverse range of foods in a variety of social situations

Mrs Gibson has enjoyed hearing how some boys and girls are trying to eat more fruit and vegetables, checking food labels and even making their families switch from white to brown bread!

Thank you to everyone who came to our assembly.

Is chocolate good for you?

February 4, 2011

Chocolate is not very good for you as it sticks into your teeth and it has lots of sugar in it.  We should only have it for a treat, and so that means not every day!!!!!  Instead we should be eating five pieces of fruit and veg a day.

Miss Moore came in today and told us another story about Jesus.  We are learning stories about caring and sharing from the bible.  Another story that was also about sharing was The Rainbow Fish.

In maths we have been doing our numbers to 100.  We have been using number lines to help us and tried to make our own hundred square.

A big big thank you to Lewis and Emma and their parents for bringing in wedding pictures.  We enjoyed looking at them.

January 31, 2011

We are doing a topic about healthy eating and so we did a food diary at home for 2 days.  We are going to look at them this week and see if we are having enough healthy food.

On Friday we had a Burns afternoon.  Lewis, Rebecca Abbie and Lauren got up on stage and did very well reciting their poem in front of the whole school.

We are also doing a topic about weddings and Emma has brought in her parents wedding album which we will get to look at with Mrs Gibson holding it.

We hope you will all come to the assembly we are doing a week on Thursday about healthy eating.  We have been very preparing it.
